What Is Patchy Hair Loss

Are you suddenly finding small patches of baldness spread over different parts of your body? Do they seem to heal and then reappear in new locations? If so, you are suffering from patchy hair loss.
Suddenly finding patchy hair loss is discouraging and those afflicted with the condition generally try to mask their condition however possible. Sufferers may wear hats or don long clothing even when the weather doesn’t dictate a need. They may try to comb their hair over or hide the patches with cosmetics.
There are a number of causes of patchy hair loss, but it is important to note that patchy hair loss is not genetic. Men and women are equally susceptible to the condition. There is no way to determine who will be affected, when, or why.
So what are the causes of patchy hair loss? Some illnesses may cause this embarrassing condition, especially those that last for a period of six months or more. Fungal infections such as ringworm may also contribute to patchy hair loss, especially at the area of infection.
Patchy hair loss can be caused by stress, long term illness, and certain types of fungal infections. Sometimes long term medical treatments, such as chemotherapy or radiation, play a contributing role in the occurrence of the condition. It is possible that the abuse of illegal substances might also contribute to instances of patchy hair loss.
Ringworm, for example, is a fungal infection that will cause patches of hair loss to appear wherever the infection is harbored. Ringworm can be easily spread from one area of the body to another, creating new bald patches wherever it lands. The fungal infection is also contagious, so immediate medical attention is necessary to stop both the infection and the hair loss.
Seek the advice of a physician if you aren’t sure what is causing your patchy hair loss. Your physican may be able to recommend treatments in order to lessen the severity of your condition. Also, do not be afraid to seek counseling if dealing with patchy hair loss has become overwhelming on an emotional level.
Sudden patchy hair loss caused by an infection will clear up as the infection is eradicated. Patchy hair loss caused by stress or other infections may take longer to heal, but will benefit from a healthy diet high in vitamins and minerals. The healing process, usually between six months and a year, will also benefit from regular daily exercise. Take special care of your body and your patchy hair loss will clear up sooner rather than later.
